Lyon County is one of the leading agricultural counties in Nevada, producing
23% of Nevada's agricultural products. At 4,380 feet above sea level the area
is typical of basin and range topography lush farmland surrounded by
high desert terrain. Main crops are alfalfa, onion, garlic, grains and potatoes.
Livestock production includes beef, sheep, dairy operations, and llama breeding.
Lyon County had already grown in population to 34,501 by the year 2000 and
increased the number of inhabitants by 48.5 percent bringing the estimated total
population in July 2006 to 51,231. The incorporated city of Yerington has been
the county seat since 1911
