Santa Cruz County is located in the south of the US State of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 38,381. The county seat is Nogales.

Santa Cruz County, created in 1899, is named after the Santa Cruz River which was named in the late 1600s by Father Kino. Santa Cruz means “holy cross” in Spanish. After that Father Kino built the famous mission which still stands today at the Tumacacori National Historic Park.

Amado, Elgin, Nogales, Patagonia, Rio Rico, Sonoita, Tubac, Tumacacori-Carmen.

Given its border location, tourism, international trade manufacturing and services are the county’s principal industries.  All of Santa Cruz County is an enterprise zone.

Nogales, Arizona and its twin city Nogales, Sonora Mexico are on the international border separating the USA and Mexico. The Arizona city serves as both, the economic capital and the county seat of Santa Cruz County, the smallest and southernmost of Arizona’s counties.

Elevation: 4,000 feet above sea level.

Weather and Climate

The climate here is much cooler than Tucson or Phoenix. This is due to the higher elevations and hilly and mountainous area. Though cooler than the cities, it still doesn’t go below freezing during the coldest winter months, except for rare occasions. The climate may be described as semi-arid with low humidity most of the year.
